An unforgettable adventure for those seeking to explore Vietnam's natural beauty and cultural diversity. See the places in Vietnam that can be seen only when you’re riding.

“Great day – loved the route and scenery – loads of bikes – mine was the best – not difficult when they are all scooters – great roadside food as well. Enjoying a well deserved beer now.” – Jeremy Aitchison

To give yourself enough time to enjoy the ride, we recommend at least 10 days of riding to take in the full North Vietnam experience.

The mountain roads up here are incredibly twisty, which means your average speed will be no more than 30-50km per hour even if you are an experienced rider.

This North Vietnam Itinerary takes you to the beautiful and less explored provinces of Mu Cang Chai and Hoang Su Phi, towards the famous Ha Giang Loop to the less explored areas of

and Ba Be Lake as well gives you enough time to add rest days to explore and ride loops around the most famous province Ha Giang and Meo Vac

Known for its winding roads, stunning mountain passes, and picturesque rural villages – North Vietnam is an incredibly scenic, off the beaten track adventure for riders looking to get out, explore, and take time to disconnect.

Beyond the famous  Ha Giang Loop ” (which is normally done in 3-5 days), we recommend giving yourself 10 days to fully discover what North Vietnam has to offer.

Ride Day 01: Hanoi to Mu Cang Chai

Starting from Hanoi and riding clockwise, our first ride day takes you to Mu Cang Chai in Yen Bai province – known for its picturesque rice terraces that cover the mountainous landscape. The terraces were carved into the hillsides by the Hmong people, an ethnic minority group in Vietnam, over 300 years ago. The terraces are not only functional, but also serve as a beautiful attraction that draws visitors from all over the world.

Ride Day 02: Mu Cang Chai to Hoang Su Phi

Ha Giang and takes riders through Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Along the way, riders will pass through numerous ethnic minority villages, including the Hmong, Tay, and Dao communities – offering a glimpse into traditional rural life in Vietnam and are a highlight of the journey. One of the most popular stops on the Ha Giang Loop is the Ma Pi Leng Pass, which offers stunning views of the Nho Que River winding through the valley below.

Best Time to Ride North Vietnam?

The best time to ride is during the dry season from October to April when the weather is milder, when you’re less likely to experience rain, and when you can catch a glimpse of the blossoming flower fields. However, note the weather can change quickly in the mountains, so check the forecast daily and pack appropriately for all types of weather.

Most riders are surprised to learn that cold weather exists in Vietnam and make the mistake of not packing their warm layers. The cold season starts from December and lasts through February – the skies are clear but the temperature will drop to 10-18c during the day. With the added wind chill while you’re ride, you would feel it even more. If you are riding during this period, make sure to pack proper insulation layers. It’s worth mentioning our adventure touring bikes come with heated grips: BMW R 1200 GS , Triumph Explorer 1200 XR , Triumph Scrambler 1200

Should I book my accommodation before or upon arrival ?

Depending on which months you plan to ride this loop ( low or high season ), we recommend all riders to pre-book in advance to make sure you get a room in the best accommodation.

In certain provinces, such as Hoang Su Phi and Ba Be Lake, the choice of comfortable and authentic accommodation are limited. Of course, as we all know motorbike trips can be unpredictable – you may fall in love with a place and want to stay longer – we will do our best to keep your booking flexible so you have room to change things around.
